Ian Burgett’s Thanksgiving 5K and 1 mile Fun Run

This event was established in memory of Ian and his incredible spirit, which lives on through great stories, sharing memories and discovering the incredible impact he had on so many people in his short time on this earth. The initial Thanksgiving 5K was held in 2012, almost seven months after Ian’s death.  Despite very little time to plan, and no advertising except on Facebook and by word of mouth, there were over 300 people the morning of the event.  It was truly amazing to see all the people that were touched by Ian, or had heard of him, show up that chilly Thanksgiving morning.

Thanksgiving was Ian’s favorite holiday.  He enjoyed the gathering of friends and family sharing stories.  His favorite holiday traditions were the cranberry strawberry salad, sweet potato casserole, getting to eat in the dining room using the crystal and china, and helping his dad fry the turkey, while playing football in the backyard.

It was quickly decided that this event would be held annually, with all proceeds from this event being added to the Memorial Fund, which would allow us to continue his legacy of thoughtful giving and random acts of kindness.  This event is a non-sanctioned race – you can walk, run, bring your dog, push a stroller, skate, longboard or just come hang out and be a part of the celebration of Ian’s life.  The event begins with a short prayer and concludes with a flower drop in the river in Ian’s memory at 10:18 am. Food, music and fellowship are available all morning.

Pre-registration is strongly encouraged, but you may register on site the day of the event.  All pre-registered participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt, but we can’t make that guarantee to those that register the day of the event.  Volunteers are always needed and welcomed with open arms!

We recognize that Thanksgiving is a busy time for many. If you are unable to join us at the event, please consider registering as a “Runner in Spirit” and then posting your pictures at Ian Burgett’s Thanksgiving Day Run Facebook Page. You may also use the online registration site to be a sponsor for the event, make a donation to the Memorial Scholarship Fund, and order the official event T-shirt.
