The Ian Michael Burgett Memorial Fund
The Ian Michael Burgett Memorial Fund was begun a few days after our 18 year old son Ian was tragically killed in an automobile accident a month before his high school graduation. We anticipate this Foundation will undertake activities that will honor the memory of our wonderful son.
Ian was a quiet, polite, compassionate individual with a wonderfully dry sense of humor. He did not speak too much, but when he did it was always memorable. His family and close friends knew Ian as an incredibly amazing young man destined for success in whatever path in life he chose. It was only after his death that other people came forward to share stories about the acts of kindness he quietly performed, not for recognition but because it was the right thing to do. With this Foundation, we will continue Ian’s legacy of thoughtful giving and random acts of kindness.
The Memorial Fund was initially begun with the many generous donations provided by friends, family, neighbors and others who knew Ian. On Thanksgiving morning of 2012, the Ian Burgett 5K and 1 mile Fun Run was held in Ian’s neighborhood. All proceeds from that event were added to the Fund, and the decision was made to hold the 5K annually to continue to grow the Memorial Fund. More importantly, by gathering each year we are able to remember Ian and remind ourselves to enjoy each day as much as Ian did.
At this time, the Ian Michael Burgett Memorial Fund will provide the following:
- A yearly donation to the Riverside Regional Medical Center for the Ian Burgett Healthcare Heroes Scholarship, which is awarded annually to a Riverside Junior Volunteer pursuing a future in the healthcare field.
- A $2,000 college scholarship to a local graduating senior.
- A donation to the American Cancer Society in honor of the many years Ian was a member of the Fighting Frijoles Relay For Life team at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy.
The Board of Directors will continue to evaluate opportunities for giving consistent with what Ian would want to do. Those will be announced here when identified.
“If you’re living for the now, there’s nothing to regret”
(Ian’s senior quote, which was published in his yearbook and distributed after his death)
